Why The West Side of The Lake

The other day when Arthur Bridge said the west side of Center Lake didn't flood, all anyone did was nod and say, well like, "Uh huh." So today when Arthur came in for coffee and, I asked him.

"It's simple," he said. "Hanssens used to farm there and they tiled out a bit from the water's edge. When the lake rises, the water all goes through the tiles to that ditch behind the barn that isn't there any more that's almost always bone dry."

"Why didn't you tell those guys from roads and ditches when they were building the levee?"

"Well," says Arthur, "The levee looked so good and those guys were all feeling so great about getting it done, I didn't want to wreck their good time. Sorry, maybe I should have stepped up and didn't."

Earl said it was probably time to get the lawn mower out and oiled, and Maeve said she and Jay Lee would be off tomorrow for the community Good Friday service. Hope they hold it indoors this year.

Happy Easter whether you spend it here or someone else's cafe.
