And Then The Ladder Split...

right down the middle putting Earl on the floor. Sorry, I'm either ahead of myself or behind. About the ladder business, I'm behind. It all sorted when Edna "mentioned" to Earl that the store room ceiling light was out. So Earl got the ladder and G.I. steadied it while Earl started up. It's a creaky old thing and Earl's small. Well, Earl was on the second rung when the entire ladder split down the middle. So now we had two problems: the light in the store room was still out and we were using flashlights, the ladder was wrecked though Earl said he could probably use the pieces for something, and I was still reconstructing the books after the computer crash. By now it was half way into the middle of October.

In the middle of it all, Maeve put up a bird feeder on her porch though I think that a family of hawks living around her house could be something of a damper on the project. When it comes to the birds, Maeve is always doing something the Extension Agent says isn't going to work.

But anyway, Earl went down to the Q & C to see what they had for ladders and to buy a replacement for the light bulb that broke when he fell off the ladder. Darn lucky that's all he broke, but that's Earl. Anyway, all they had were a bunch of double ladders one of the Stille brothers bought from a fire truck company's over supply. It was twice as big as what we needed and that was twice as big folded in half. Earl said it would do but they had to get it back to the restaurant and it would no how fit in his pick up. Yeah, they thought about using a flat bed, but there was about to be a hay sale and they'd have to deliver and a load of hay first and the guys weren't up for that. Finally, Jay Lee brought his pick up over to the Q & C and backed up to Earl's truck and brought it back that way. Sheriff almost spilled his coffee laughing. You know they got that thing into the alley and of course they weren't going to get it through the back door and around corners so Earl called the blacksmith and they made a day or so worth of alterations.

Then G.I. had to go back to the Q & C, because those geniuses forgot the light bulb. We should have had speeches and a reception when they finally put in the new bulb. We didn't; we were behind. And that's where I've been. Thanks for your patience.
